About the
Chapter:
Greater
Los Angeles Singles chapter of the Japanese
American Citizens League
The Greater
L.A. Singles (GLAS) chapter of the Japanese
American Citizens League (JACL), formed in 1983,
is a unique and active chapter providing single
individuals a vital link to participate in and
promote JACL mission and programs. Membership is
not limited to singles, or to Japanese
Americans.
Meetings are held in the evenings the 2nd
Friday of most months at the Faith United
Methodist Church, 2115 W. 182nd St., Torrance.
The meeting begins with JACL chapter business
followed by a program with a guest speaker.
Programs, open to the public, cover a variety of
interesting and informative topics. GLAS issues
a monthly newsletter.
When not held at the church, meetings/programs
are held at Merit Park Recreation Hall, Gardena
on a Sunday afternoon.
GLAS was the founder and promoter of the
National JACL Singles Convention. There were 11
such conventions held in various cities.
GLAS also participates in community and other
JACL activities throughout the year.
Guests and prospective members are welcome and
encouraged to attend the meeting/programs. There
is time for fellowship and refreshments
afterward. For information on meeting dates and
time, email:

SCHOLARSHIP
GLAS annually awards the Hana Uno Shepard
Memorial Scholarship, a unique scholarship given
to a graduating college-bound high school senior
from a single-parent family. The student should
be of Japanese descent and a resident of Los
Angeles or Orange County. GLAS provides the
scholarship recipient with a JACL student
membership.
In February, the application process may be
started. The high school counseling office may
have the GLAS forms. If not available there,
send email to:
